CC@S has been given permission by the Religious Studies Department to offer a
two-credit course on the Second Vatican Council, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this
remarkable three-year event in the history of the Church. The course will consist of lectures
given by experts in the field and small group discussion of such topics as the historical
setting of the Council, the issues addressed, significant changes wrought by the Council, a
look at key documents, an evaluation of what was left undone, and the enduring legacy of
Vatican II. As part of this course, there will be a weekend Symposium. The public is wel-
come. Watch our bulletin and website for more details.

Faith Formation
The program recognizes
those who have committed
to a more systematized
study of Catholicism so they
are better prepared to serve
more effectively in ministry
on this campus and in future
parishes.
Level One
,
offered as
part of Newman Nights
requires participants to
choose among offerings
in seven modules relevant
to the Catholic Faith:
Scripture, Jesus, Church
and Sacraments, Morality,
Spirituality and Prayer,
Church in the World
and Being Catholic.
Participants may choose
to complete the Level
One in one year or two.
Level Two
,
which will
be offered next year
along with Level One,
builds upon the basic
discussions and delves
into a more rigorous
study of these same
modules.
There are participation
and written reflection
requirements for each
level and certificates
will be offered in both
levels once the complete
program is in place.
There will be a make-
up video option for
anyone who has to miss a
session, with a minimum
of six in-person sessions
required for each level.
CC@S hopes eventually to employ the
same sophisticated digital media and Internet
tools now widely used by other organiza-
tions to engage with their audience. Our
on-line component for this year is twofold: to
enhance the on-site programming and offer-
ings through posting on the website video-
taped and podcasted sessions of the Newman
Nights and the Spring Quarter Course; and
to offer separate spiritual and intellectual on-
line resources available to anyone interested.
For example, we will provide at least three “Busy Person’s
Retreats” during the coming liturgical year, which would
afford participants an opportunity for personal reflection and growth at their own pace.
With the help of a PhD theologian who will work as a part-time Content Curator, we will
begin to make available on our website some of the existing resources that abound in the
discipline of Religious Studies and in the area of Catholic Spirituality.

On Tuesday evenings, the CC@S participates in presentations and theological inquiry that
reflect the breadth and depth of the Catholic intellectual tradition. These lectures, pre-
sented by outside experts in their field as well as our CC@S staff, seek to provide a robust
and nuanced examination of various theological and spiritual issues, arranged around three
basic themes: Scripture and Jesus, the Church and the Sacraments, and Self, God, Church
and the World. Of the 27 topics covered, seventeen are being offered by professors of theol-
ogy, or by experts in their particular fields, including Dr. Jean Francois Racine, Professor
Marianne Farina, CSC, Rev. Gerald Coleman, S.S., Dr. Lisa Fullam and Rev Michael Fones,
O.P. Each large group presentation is followed by optional small group discussions, led by
CC@S campus ministers or trained faciltators. Newman Nights are open to all. Check the
bulletin or visit the CC@S website for a full schedule.
