Director’s Message
fr. nathan, O.P.
We speak of love, but what do we know about it,
unless we see the power of love manifested; unless we
are given the power to bestow, and a willing heart to
bestow it upon, and within humanity. We say God is
love, but if we do not feel the power of His love, we
do not know anything about it. To be loved by others
makes the power of love within our hearts grow.
—Jane Stanford
I love words. Those who hear me preach or teach are used
to hearing me build a thought around the history and derivation of particular words. Two of my favorite words are twins
which I think became separated at birth: Believe and Beloved. One was adopted by the mind and the other by the heart;
there they grew up independently unaware of the existence of the other. Each was an only child that sometimes thought
or felt a sense of deep incompletion. Each was well nurtured and engaged the world in its own way. Each found its way
to Stanford University where it set out to seek its way in the world.
What happened when they met? It’s too soon to say. That story is still being written.
You’ll find bits of that story in these pages. For some, mind and heart met in the faces of children caught in poverty and
the politics of immigration experienced on our border immersion trip on spring break. Others met through our Newman
Night faith formation series where they were set up by friends who thought they belonged together. Some first noticed
each other in Stanford classes like last year’s
Vatican II: Catholicism Meets Modernity
or might in next spring’s
Religion
and Science in Dialogue: Possibilities and Future Directions
. Some have many years of growing together in the day to day
life of the Catholic Community at Stanford.
As we look to the academic year ahead, I know that there will be many opportunities for Believers to come to know
they are Beloved. And for Beloved people of God to grow to know more about what they most deeply Believe. United
by the One who first loved us into being, we can then invite others into the grand adventure of becoming one in mind
and heart.
If we haven’t gotten to know and love each other yet, I hope we will very soon.
