Director’s Message
fr. nathan, O.P.
have you ever had a song get stuck in your head?
When that happens with some commercial jingle or some annoying tune or lyric I don’t
even like, it drives me nuts. I’ve taken to changing the radio stations in my car quickly if I
hear something that has that aggravating potential.
So what’s been rattling around in my noggin this summer? A fragment of “Joy to the World.”
“
Let eh-eh-vry-ee hah-ah-art,
pre-peh-are hih-im roo-ooh-oom.”
So why am I hearing Christmas carols in my head in the middle of the summer? Probably
because so much of the work that happens on a college campus in the summer anticipates
the arrival of a new group of students in the fall. I know that’s certainly true of the work of
the staff of the Catholic Community at Stanford.
In this issue of our newsletter you’ll read about the advent of Newman Nights, a new approach to helping undergrads,
grads and members of our permanent community grow in faith and friendship. They’ll help welcome more than a dozen
young men and women who’ve already made known their intention to explore being received into the Catholic Church
in the year ahead. The ESTEEM program, an initiative of the National Leadership Roundtable on Church Management,
enters its third year, training young Catholics to discern their gifts and put those gifts to use in leadership. And as the
Church begins to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Vatican II in October, we’ve been working with Stanford’s Department
of Religious Studies to plan a cross-generational course on this historical council. We’re really excited about that.
When I think of all of the things that could be clattering around in my brain, I’m really OK with the umpteenth verse of
“
Joy to the World.” It is a joy to serve at Stanford. It is a joy to welcome new students, faculty and staff to our community.
It is a joy to remember that our beloved, Jesus the Christ draws near to us, dwelling among and even within us.
So let’s crank up the volume. Let the voices in your head join with mine and with all the saints and angels:
“
and heav-ven and na-ture sing,
and heav-ven and na-ture sing,
and heav-ven and heah-eh-ven,
and na-ture sing!”
