Social Justice
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.
- Matthew 25:35-36
The Catholic Community at Stanford is dedicated to serving the needs of our community. We participate in a number of projects, so whether you are interested in group activities or in making an ongoing personal commitment, there is something for everyone. Check the Sunday bulletin or the Event Calendar page for details on upcoming opportunities. Among our activities we include:
Alternative Spring Break Trip, March 19-26, 2011Last Spring Break we traveled to El Salvador to listen and learn from the witnesses of a devastating civil war. The Catholic Church was instrumental in giving a voice to the poor and many were martyred for standing up against the injustices. We hope to return next spring break as we continue to build a relationship with the Tamarindo Foundation in the town of Guarjila. If you feel called to help students have a life-changing experience, please contact Lourdes Alonso (650)723-2490. Thanksgiving Service Trip to Las VegasDuring the Thanksgiving break, we offer students an opportunity to serve at the St. Therese Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The St. Therese Center is a community resource center and food pantry for families affected by HIV. We are excited to announce that we have a team of ten preparing to serve with the St. Therese Center. Six undergrads and two grads will join Lourdes Alonso and Fr. Nathan on this service trip as we help with all aspects of the Thanksgiving food distribution. Pax ChristiThis is a gathering of Catholics interested in working for world and local peace. It involves meeting, discussion, prayer and action. For more information, contact Ed Ehmke (650)326-7988 or visit the Pax Christi at Stanford website. |
