Volunteer

There are many ways in which members of the community can participate in the worship life of the Church. Learn more about the different ministries, activities, and volunteering opportunities at the Catholic Community at Stanford University.

Administrative

  • Volunteers are always needed for various tasks in the Parish Office
  • Volunteers help with the counting of our weekly offertory
  • Volunteers are needed for welcoming new members of our Parish Community

For more information, please contact M'Lis Berry (650) 725-0080.

Liturgy

  • Musicians/Choir volunteers are needed to assist the sung prayer of the congregation during mass. The Choir is made up of both students and non-students. Student volunteers are specifically needed to sing and play at the 10pm Mass. Rehearsals are held one night a week, and before Sunday mass. Instrumentalists are also encouraged to participate _ their music adds yet another level of beauty to the overall prayer. Opportunities are also available for involvement in concert and interfaith services.
  • 10pm Mass Student Greeters -- prepare the church for Sunday evening liturgy and clean-up after Mass.
  • Altar Servers/Acolytes -- assist the community at Sunday worship. They arrive a half-hour before Mass begins and help set up. During Mass, the altar servers join in the entrance procession, are seated with the presider, and assist him with various tasks such as holding the Sacramentary and preparing the altar. At the end of liturgy, altar servers clean and store the Communion vessels and perform other "finishing-up" details.
  • Greeters -- serve an important role as ministers of hospitality. They greet people before Sunday liturgy and answer any questions visitors may have. At the close of the liturgy, greeters go to the entrances of the church to take up the collection. They remain a few minutes after Mass to make sure the church is cleared of any left over bulletins and other material.
  • Lectors -- proclaim the Good News of the Scriptures in the midst of the community. The readings are assigned prior to Mass. Along with the scripture texts, lectors are also given supplementary materials of the theological and historical background to help them better understand the texts.
  • Eucharistic Ministers -- distribute Holy Communion during weekend liturgies and special feast dates. They share both bread and cup with the worshipping community.

University Student Ministry

  • Volunteers are needed for monthly undergrad dinners serving 60-80 students after the 4:30 PM Liturgy. Volunteers are asked to either cook the entree and side dishes themselves, or pay to have the meal prepared by an outside source.
  • Student volunteers to help set-up for various events, including the dinners, service projects, etc... (we don't usually have much difficulty getting volunteers)
  • A DJ to volunteer his or her services for 2 hours or so far various events including the Blood Drive and the undergrad dinners.
  • Drivers for various events (could be grad students or anyone from the community), especially local service events that undergrads participate in. Oftentimes transportation has been difficult with so few students having cars. Some events include going to the Soup Kitchen in Redwood City and Palo Alto and Habitat for Humanity in Redwood City.

Faith Development/Sacramental Preparation

Children's Religious Education Program

Aids are needed to assist the master teachers.  The program uses the Cathechesis of the Good Shepherd, modeled after a Montessori-based, hands-on learning style. Session meet Sunday morning, 9:30-10:25 A.M. Contact Teresa Pleins.

Children's Liturgy of the Word

Leaders and Aids are needed to work with children ages 3-10 during our Sunday Children's Liturgy of the Word.  This take place during the 10:30 Mass in Tresidder.  Age-appropriate Scriptures, songs, and various activities take place during this time.  The children are brought back to Mass in time for the Eucharistic Prayer.  Contact Teresa Pleins.

Special Groups

  • Young Adult volunteer leaders are needed for the Fall Undergrad Retreat, preferably a young married couple from the community.
  • Faculty members who are willing to come in and talk to the undergrad fellowship about their faith experience in the form of a "testimony". The fellowships meet 4-5 times per quarter and are a casual way for students to learn more about the faith of their peers and members of the faculty.
