Book of Remembrance: During the month of November, the Church remembers in a special way all those who have gone before us in death, marked by the sign of faith. We will have a large Book of Remembrance available after the Masses for you to inscribe the names of those you wish to remember during this holy season. Those names will be held up in prayer at all the Masses during the month.
Choir: Early Holiday Liturgy Needs Singers and Instrumentalists:
Every year we celebrate a beautiful Advent/Early Holiday Liturgy in our community. This
year's Liturgy is on SATURDAY, DEC. 5, 11:00pm in Memorial Church. We have an
orchestra, a full choir, Advent Scriptures, a candle-lit procession into the church, and
Christmas caroling with a brass group after Mass. Singers and instrumentalists, we need
you to participate! Rehearsals for singers are on Wednesday nights, 8-10:00pm. Contact Teresa for more info, tpleins@stanford.edu.
Eucharistic Adoration:
Join us for Eucharistic Adoration every tuesday in the Sanctuary on the third floor of
Old Union. Spend some time with Jesus, bring to Him your cares and concerns or just
rest in His presence and adore Him. Adoration begins at 9. Rosary will start at 10.
For more information contact Michael Davenport at mdavenpo@stanford.edu, or Andreina
Parisi-Amon at andreina@stanford.edu
Daily Rosary:
Students meet daily to pray the rosary in the Sanctuary on the
third floor of Old Union: Mon-Sat at 10pm, Sun at 9pm. All are welcome; no experience
with the rosary is necessary. For more information contact Charlie Capps
(ccapps@stanford.edu).
Thanksgiving Break Service Trip to Las Vegas:
We're looking for sponsors for our Thanksgiving Service Trip. We'll be sending students
to the St. Therese HIV/AIDS Resource Center in Las Vegas to help with their Thanksgiving
food distribution. Look for students outside who will be passing out St. Therese's
autobiography, Story of a Soul, to those who are interested in sponsoring our trip
through prayer, reading, and donation.
In lieu of bringing cans for a food drive, the students going to Las Vegas for our Thanksgiving Service Trip are asking community members to make a small donation for the St. Therese Center Food Drive. Our students have committed to supplying $400 worth of food for the Thanksgiving Giveaway at the St. Therese HIV/AIDS Resource Center in Las Vegas. We hope everyone will join us in this effort - even small donations help! Look for students to be holding baskets just outside after Mass.

COMMUNITY AT LARGE
CCAS Monthly Financial Update
During the first four months of the CCAS fiscal
year (July-October), we are on target to break-even for fiscal 2010. As a Finance Board,
we have set a goal to raise an additional $150,000 over break-even this year, in order
to restore services that were scaled back during the downturn and fund future growth in
the ministry.
July to October, Collections, $18,644 (40% of annual goal).
Donations, $119,005
(24% of annual goal)
The Living Faith Society (LFS) is a group of community members that support the CCAS by
meeting their annual gift pledges with a monthly online donation. Members receive a
quarterly letter and book of daily reflections. The contributions of the LFS help the
community better forecast its finances, providing a stable source of financial support.
To join the LFS, please visit catholic.stanford.edu, and click DONATE.
As of October we have 84 contributing members.
Christmas Outreach
Our community will be collecting gifts especially geared toward teens for the holidays.
We contribute these to St. Justin's Parish in Santa Clara, as part of their holiday
support to poor and homeless families. Their Community Ministry office feeds close to
4,000 people per month, and at Christmas time adds presents to the food distribution.
Oftentimes there are presents for younger children, but hardly any brought for the 12-18
ages. These kids could use something to make them smile as their families navigate the
shaky economy of today. Suggestions for gifts: sports items, electronic devices, gift
cards to Target, Barnes & Noble, etc., clothes. The gifts should be unwrapped. Gifts
will be collected from Nov. 22-Dec. 18. Bring them to Mass or drop them by our Offices
on the 3rd floor of Old Union. For more info, contact Teresa, tpleins@stanford.edu. On
behalf of all the kids and their parents--THANK YOU!!!

In the November 2000 Pastoral Statement Responsibility, Rehabilitation and Restoration, the US Bishops promoted restorative justice as a way of bringing about healing for all of those affected by crime, violence and the justice system-crime victims and survivors, families of victims, offenders, families of offenders, volunteers and professionals working with those impacted. In response to this call to embrace restorative justice, the California Catholic Conference is sponsoring one-day, bilingual, free-of-charge training conferences throughout the state. Similar conferences to the one in San Francisco will be held in the Dioceses of Fresno and Orange.

Your honeymoon was a special time. Wherever you went, the things you saw and did were secondary. Just being together was most important. The Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend has the same focus. The weekend centers entirely on your relationship. It is a positive, simple common sense, private experience between you and your spouse, that revitalizes marriage by helping you to see again those loving qualities in each other that you may be taking for granted. The next local Catholic Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend is: February 5-7, 2010 (Mountain View). FROM THE OFFICE OF THE BISHOP
September 16, 2009
We have been in contact, once again, with the Santa Clara County Public Health Department, which has informed us of an increase in the transmission of the H1N1 flu virus throughout the County. Although a vaccination for H1N1 is expected to be available within the coming months, we have been warned to prepare for a season that will last through the late winter or even into the spring.
During this time of public concern, I am asking all of us to be more aware on those occasions when many people gather and come into close physical contact with each other. Therefore, in response to the request by the Office of Public Health and in order to assist our parishioners in limiting the spread of the swine flu and to do everything possible to safeguard the health of our local community, I am asking all our parishes, missions, schools, and religious communities to implement immediately the following temporary adaptations to the liturgy, until further notice:
1. Ministers, including clergy and ministers of hospitality, are asked not to shake hands when they greet parishioners. Also, if the assembly is invited to greet each other at the beginning of the liturgy or to gather after Mass, the same precautions should be taken.
2. The faithful should be encouraged to refrain from holding hands during the recitation or singing of the Lord's Prayer.
3. The faithful should be encouraged to share the Sign of Peace in ways other than shaking hands or touching. A reverent bow to each other might be suggested.
4. Priests who concelebrate a liturgy are to receive Holy Communion by intinction.
5. All who distribute Holy Communion, both clergy and extraordinary ministers, as well as those who minister to the sick and homebound, are to wash their hands with an alcohol-based anti-bacterial solution before and after they administer the Sacrament. This should be done as discretely as possible so as not to make this action seem part of the normative order of the Mass.
6. Holy Communion is to be distributed only under the species of the consecrated bread. Special care should be taken to ensure that those who are unable to consume the host because of disease or age are given the option to consume safely from the cup if they desire.
7. Holy Communion should be distributed only into the hands of communicants and not on the tongue.
8. The practice of touching a non-communicant for a blessing is also to be discontinued.
9. After being properly purified (in order to prevent cross-contamination, this should be done by the priest or deacon who has already received from the Cup), all Mass vessels (chalices, patens, and ciboria) are to be carefully washed in hot, soapy water after each Mass. 10. Priests, deacons, readers, and servers-since they will be touching items in common-are to sanitize their hands before and after Mass, and during Mass if their hands become contaminated.
When appropriate, we will return to our normative liturgical practices, which highly value full participation in the Eucharist through the sharing of the cup and generous signs of hospitality, reconciliation, and unity.
In addition to these temporary adaptations, I ask you to continue to encourage all of your ministers and faithful to follow the directives of our national and local health organizations that suggest frequent and substantial hand-washing with soap and water, covering one's nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing and washing one's hands after doing so, avoiding touching one's eyes, nose, or mouth, and limiting contact with others when one feels sick. As pastoral ministers, we are often among the first to care for others. Yet we must first take care of our own health so that we may minister effectively and responsibly.
In conjunction with this, please remind the faithful that the obligation to participate in Sunday Mass does not hold for those who are seriously ill or may have flu or cold symptoms and assure them that a minister to the sick will gladly bring Holy Communion to them if they request it.
To assist you in implementing these temporary adaptations and in caring for
the health and spiritual well-being your communities throughout the year, a
resource page is available on the diocesan web
site
Thank you for your immediate attention to these matters and for undertaking the catechesis that will be necessary to reintroduce these adaptations to your communities this weekend.
As we enter into fall, please keep in your prayers and those of your communities those who contract this and other viruses. Thank your for your ministry to them and to their families.
With every best wish and kind regard, I remain,
Sincerely yours,
Patrick J. McGrath
Bishop of San José
